Winnipeg Blue Bombers Sign Former Mississippi State Linebacker To Extension

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed linebacker and special teams ace Brian Cole to a contract extension Monday.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are bringing back a key member of their defense and special teams.

Former Mississippi State linebacker Brian Cole agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Bombers on Monday that keeps him in Winnipeg through the 2024 season.

Cole recorded three defensive tackles, 14 special teams tackles, and three forced fumbles in 15 games in 2023, his second season with Winnipeg. He had six special teams tackles in 11 games in 2022.

The Mississippi native had two previous CFL stops in 2022, first with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at training camp and later spent a month with the Edmonton Elks.

Cole was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings and went through training camp with the team before being cut.

He signed with the Miami Dolphins practice squad and spent the rest of the season with the team. He signed a futures contract in early 2021 but was waived before training camp.

He spent 2021 training camp with the Carolina Panthers but was waived at the end of camp.

Cole played with Michigan for a year before transferring to East Mississippi Community College in 2016. His last three college seasons were at Mississippi State, where he recorded 78 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, four pass deflections, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 17 games.

Winnipeg has re-signed several defensive players in the past few weeks, including All-Star defensive back Deatrick Nichols.
