Frankfurt Fans Clash With Police In Italy Despite Being Banned From Attending Napoli Game

Fans from Eintracht Frankfurt clashed with police in Italy ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game against Napoli.

Away supporters were banned from attending the round of 16 second leg after violent altercations between Napoli and Frankfurt fans had marred the first leg in February.

Despite this ban, around 400 Frankfurt fans traveled to southern Italy before Wednesday's match.

A police car was set on fire in Naples, while a group of Frankfurt fans were seen throwing smoke bombs and flares at officers, who responded by spraying tear gas.

Local reports have claimed that Napoli ultras also clashed with Frankfurt fans on Wednesday.

The violent scenes caused thousands of pounds in damage and left many locals shaken.

Italy's deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini reacted to Wednesday's violence by writing on Instagram: "These are not fans, they are criminals, thugs.

"I wonder if they would make the same mess in Germany?"

On the pitch, Napoli had won 2-0 in the first leg.

The Italian side won 3-0 on Wednesday to go through 5-0 on aggregate to their first ever Champions League quarter-final.
