Two CFL Players Log NFL Workouts, Including All-Star DL Mathieu Betts

Two CFL players participated in NFL workouts this week, including 2023 sack leader Mathieu Betts and return specialist Tyreik McAllister.

CFL players continue to get looks from the NFL ahead of the postseason, with two being hosted by teams this week alone.

It was reported this week that BC Lions All-Star defensive lineman Mathieu Betts worked out with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday. Hamilton Tiger-Cats wide receiver and return specialist Tyreik McAllister also got a workout on Tuesday with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Betts had a spectacular 2023 season, recording a league-high 18 sacks in the regular season and winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. His playing also earned him an All-Star selection for the first time.

Betts was a first-round pick of the 2019 CFL Draft for the Edmonton Football Team, where he racked up two sacks, one tackle and one forced fumble in his debut season. Since joining BC in 2021, he has put up 72 total tackles, 25 sacks and four forced fumbles. The Chicago Bears had him in for training camp before his CFL career.

McAllister totaled 416 offensive yards and two touchdowns in his first season in the CFL with Hamilton. He also returned 41 kickoffs, 56 punts and seven missed field goals, one of which he ran back for a score. The speedster led the CFL in kickoff return average and all-purpose yards.

His only NFL stop was a brief stint with the Denver Broncos after going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. He already had a workout with the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason.
